Burns' Night'07
2007-01-27

On January 27th, the 8th Annual Traditional Burns‘ Night was held in Reval Hotel Lietuva. The event was organized by the British Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania in a partnership with the British Embassy, Vilnius and hosted 280 guests from Lithuania, Scotland and England.

This year guests had an opportunity to try traditional Scottish four course menu specially prepared by a group of students from Clydebank and Cumbernauld Colleges in Glasgow led by Paul Meakin, Curriculum Leader for Hospitality, Clydebank College. The menu included cock-a-Leekie soup, the haggis, beef with mushroom ragout and crannachan - delicious Scottish dessert made with oatmeal, cream and rasberries. The traditional Burns Supper was enriched with Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Burns’ Supper was accompanied by a performance by the Pipes of Tayforth UOTC in Scotland, “Address to the Haggis” was recited with a great passion by Jim Paterson from Dundee, traditional Toasts "Toast to the Lassies" and "Reply from the Lassies" like never before with a good dose of humour were said by Keith Shannon, Deputy Head of Mission and H.M. Consul at the British Embassy, Vilnius and Morag Kerr from West of Scotland Colleges Partnership. During the supper Lews Castle Ceilidh Band from one of the islands off the west coast of Scotland provided with a selection of traditional music and after invited everybody to dance and enjoy some classic Scottish Ceilidh dances.

This year the charity raffle raised 14.000 Litas (2.672 GBP) from the charity raffle tickets to support a social - psychological programme “Home – Start in Lithuania. Assistance for the families” in Klaipėda, which helps families in short term crisis and “Zippi’s friends”, a social adaptation programme for the kids age 5-7, which helps the children to develop coping skills.
The money raised will be used by programmes presented above to train professionally the volunteers, publish teaching material and to create a website.
The Chamber is proud of the kind response it receives from its members, friends and distinguished Burns Night guests who support it in helpingthe charity raffle.
Over 30 prizes were kindly contributed to the charity raffle by chamber corporate members and individuals.
The Golden Prize "Romantic Weekend for two in Scotland" was won by Rasa Barisiene, British Airways.
