First Guy Fawkes Night in Vilnius!
2009-11-07

On November 7th, the British Chamber of Commerce held its first Guy Fawkes (Bonfire ) Night in Belmontas Leisure and Activities Centre.

Despite the rain, over 50 members and friends with their families gathered to celebrate this traditional English event.

Chris Butler, Chairman BCC made a welcome speech and gave a short introduction about Guy Fawkes Night traditions in the UK. The excellent bonfire with the Guy was lit up. Mulled wine, hot soup and sausages kept everybody warm throughout the evening. The children had a good fun at the Toffee Apple Tree trying to bite hanging apples withought hands. A delicious Parkin cake made by BCC member Barbara Little, has certainly brought even more traditional flavour to the event and was enjoyed enormously by guests. The event ended up with fantastic fireworks displayed by Blikas, UAB and those who were not worried about getting wet or cold, continued the celebrity back by the bonfire.

The chamber expresses its great gratitude to sponsors of first Guy Fawkes Night:

Also to Egle Pliopliene and her team for making a Guy and excellent  bonfire, which survived the rain;

BCC Member Barbara Little for making such a delicious Parkin cake and toffee apples;

Lisa Thomas for helping the BCC office with ideas for the first Guy Fawkes Night to happen;

And finally, Blikas UAB for fantastic fireworks, exceeding our expectations.

Guy Fawkes (Bonfire) Night It’s a traditional  event widely celebrated in the UK for about 400 years already. It’s history goes back to 1605 when a group of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, were attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London. The event is accompanied by firework displays, the lighting of bonfires and the ceremonial effigy-burning of one Guy Fawkes.

More about Guy Fawkes Traditions

Many of the celebration's traditions have changed with the times. The sectarian element, for the most part, has faded. The "guy" an effigy of Guy Fawkes, is still usually thrown on the bonfire but an effigy of the 17th century Pope rarely is. Today people of all persuasions come out for the fun of huge public fireworks displays and for the primal thrill of watching a really big bonfire.

People used to stick sausages on sticks into the bonfire and roast potatoes on the coals. Nowadays people are more conscious of health and safety and getting that close to the huge bonfires is prevented by barriers at most public events. But sausages and potatoes or bangers and mash remain a popular Guy Fawkes supper.
